Behind Cheeni Chronicles

Vicky Zhuang Yi-Yin

Filmmaker | Writer | Performer | Theatre Productionist | Storyteller

I was born in Pakistan, and both my parents are Chinese. That makes me Pakistani Chinese. Yeah, not a very common combination. It isn't. To be honest, I am an anomaly. An interesting one too. This website is about my celebration of life in Pakistan and my work.

This is Me: About

My name is Vicky Zhuang Yi-Yin. I am a multidisciplinary artist and storyteller. My parents came to Pakistan in the 1980s from China, and I was born in 1988. I have lived in Pakistan ever since. That has been a very strong part of my identity as a First-Generation Pakistani-born Chinese, and I wear it like a badge.

This is where I document my experiences, and my work and share my thoughts in a more curated form. I enjoy the stage, behind the camera, singing songs, and working with words, and sometimes I also teach what I know to other people. You'll get to see more things coming up on this website with each project that I complete.

You might be wondering what Cheeni means and why is it part of my title? The word "Cheeni" or "چینی" means "Chinese" in Urdu. Growing up, I used to hate being called that because it was something random strangers would call me on the streets, and then even my class fellows and friends started calling me that. Now, I take that word and weave it into the work that I am doing. It is a fun take on the identity that I hold on to that I am Chinese, but I was born and raised in Pakistan.

It also means sugar, but I don't want to associate with that, at least not right now.
